Dubai continues to become friendlier toward U.S. businesses

Many forward-thinking California business owners, particularly those in the technology arena, may be thinking about the global market. According to the MIT Technology Review, Dubai is an increasingly entrepreneur-friendly location that could provide access to millions of new customers.

Although culture definitely plays a part in consumer attitudes, Dubai holds the distinction of being a city of immigrants. Not only that, a large proportion of the residents are under the age of 30, and it is estimated that approximately two-thirds of these, both in Dubai and across the Middle East, will own smartphones and similar devices within the next two years.

With so many connected consumers, entrepreneurship has already taken off in the area. In addition, the local government and the United Arab Emirates have been taking steps to improve the chances for entrepreneurs from other countries to succeed there. For example, there is a new visa opportunity for people in the specialized occupation of technology, which offers residency to anyone who fits the eligibility requirements. There is also now a bankruptcy law in place that makes trying, failing, and then trying again an option in an area where traditionally, the inability to pay debts had led to criminal consequences.

Already, global leaders such as Amazon, Google, Facebook and LinkedIn have developed strong presences in the Middle East. U.S. companies that seek to establish themselves in Dubai may also find assistance from organizations such as the American Business Council in Dubai. This organization partners with local leaders and U.S. stakeholders, businesses and individuals, representing their interests and promoting ties between America and the UAE.
